Did you know Velázquez was born in Seville ? ……………. That is why we have given ourselves the license to interpret this great artist

Joselu Domínguez (Seville, 1971) has had a special talent for the plastic arts (drawing, painting, moulding) since childhood. It has always been his true passion.

CERAMICAS SEVILLA is proud to have this sensational interpreter of Andalusia's cultural roots.

Leaving his dream aside he studied Technical Architecture. His artistic facet passed to a second level and not even he bet a penny that it would play a leading role in his life again. However, that creative and bohemian spirit of his childhood continued to beat within him waiting for his moment.

His sister Rosa suggested to him the idea of creating ceramic figurines, taking advantage of the knowledge that both had in this sense and the success that their works had aroused among family and friends. It was time to cast off and bet on art as a way of life. After a period of experimentation with materials and techniques, in 2010 he began to work on artistic ceramics in Raku, a very laborious decorative oriental technique.

The difference between Raku and other techniques is a second firing at 900 degrees, then moved to a container with organic material that causes a chemical reaction. This produces some really fascinating shades, glows, tones, textures and colors and never the same from one piece to another. Small works of art unique and exclusive and impossible to repeat, signed by the special characteristics of Raku technique.

It's a complex process that is influenced by many factors, even I don't know exactly what the result will be. In conventional ceramics you control everything from beginning to end, with Raku there is a magical moment of expectation when you do not know the effect that firing has on the piece", he explains.

These are pieces he makes with care and fine sensitivity at the workshop and always under the impulse of the passion of those who do what he does with great pleasure. His creations were very well received from the beginning, although the artist prefers to work slowly, in order to be able to savour the artistic process without rushing.

Nevertheless, his works, among which the Velázquez-Menina stands out, can be acquired in our Ceramicas Sevilla stores as well as Seville Museum of Fine Arts, the Thyssen Museum ( Málaga ), Málaga Picasso Museum ( Picasso's Birthplace ), Medina Azahara Museum in Córdoba - and soon at the Pompidou Centre.

Raku means tranquillity, fun and joy, exactly what Joselu has achieved with this technique by moving away from the corset of schedules.
